Kabul, Afghanistan (AHN) – Bags containing hundreds of thousands of euros have been delivered to Afghanistan’s presidential palace in the capital Kabul and the cash is from Iran, according to Afghan President Hamid Karzai.
In a press conference Monday, Karzai said the money is official aid from Iran and is used to cover expenses at his office and not for buying the loyalty of politicians, tribal elders and Taliban commanders as reported. Presidential Chief of Staff Umar Daudzai receives the cash payments from Iran regularly on his instruction, the president said.
In August, Iran’s ambassador to Afghanistan, Feda Hussein Maliki, brought to the presidential plane a large plastic bag containing euro bills and handed it to Daudzai.
Karzai said other friendly countries, including the U.S., had given bags of money to the presidential palace and other government offices.
