As protests continue, interim leader steps down in Tunisia

Tunis, Tunisia (NewsBahn) – The interim prime minister of Tunisia, a long-time ally of the country’s leader toppled last month, stepped down on Sunday, saying “I am not ready to be the person who takes decisions that would end up causing casualties.”

Mohammed Ghannouchi announced his resignation on state television as security forces clashed with protestors for a third day. Three people were reported killed as demonstrators responded to police tear gas and warning shots by throwing stones.

Nearly 200 people have been arrested since demonstrations began on Friday, according to the country’s interior ministry.

Ghannouchi said that “I am not running away from responsibility…. This is to open the way for a new prime minister. I am not ready to be the person who takes decisions that would end up causing casualties.”

Ghannouchi, 69, assumed leadership of the country after president Zine El Abidine Ben Ali, fled Tunisia Jan. 14. He was seen as too close to Ben Ali, having served under him since 1999.

By leaving his office, Ghannouchi said, “This resignation will serve Tunisia, and the revolution and the future of Tunisia.”

In one of his final acts, the prime minister set elections for July 15.
