Physical abuse of railroad employees by passengers is steadily increasing, a survey conducted by the Association of Japanese Private Railways shows. In the first half of this fiscal year, 124 assaults were reported, about 60 percent of which were by passengers who were drunk, the survey showed. Most of the assailants were aged from their 40s to 60s. Sixty-eight of the attacks, or 55 percent, were by people in their 40s to 60s. Of all the acts of violence committed by passengers against private railway employees and JR East employees, 60 to 70 percent were perpetrated by drunk passengers. (Yomiuri)
