Egyptian sets himself on fire to protest against government

Cairo, Egypt (AHN) – A 50-year-old man set himself on fire Monday outside Egypt’s parliament building in an apparent imitation of a protester’s death by self-immolation in Tunisia that led to the ouster of its president.

Abdu Abdel-Monaim Kamal, a restaurant owner and father of four from Ismailia, survived with minor burns in his chest, neck, hands and legs after police quickly put out the flames and took him to a hospital.

Kamal protested outside the parliament building before pouring fuel on his body and setting himself on fire. The act was similar to what 26-year-old Mohamed Bouazizi did in December in the town of Sidi Bouzid, Tunisia.

Bouazizi died early January from burn injuries he suffered after setting himself on fire in December to protest the police action preventing him from selling vegetables without a permit. The self-immolation sparked violent protests across Tunisia that forced President Zine al-Abidine Ben Ali to resign last week after 23 years in power.
