Palo Alto, CA, United States (AHN) – Facebook has announced it will be unveiling a new mail messaging service. During a Monday press conference Mark Zuckerberg, CEO and founder of Facebook discussed the new Facebook Mail system and called it an improvement.

The Facebook staff nicknamed the project “Gmail killer” and it’s expected to deal a huge blow to other web companies who provide email services.

Zuckerberg said email was past its prime in the modern age where most U.S. teens prefer texts and instant messages. Zuckerberg said the company doesn’t believe email which arrived in the early 1970s is going to be a modern messaging system.

Facebook is the hands down leader in social media and now with their new free email type messaging system, called “Modern Messaging System” is expected to further catapult them past their competitiors and Internet industry colleagues.

Other providers such as Yahoo count on their email services to drive users and traffic to their other web offerings.

Officially dubbed “Project Titan” industry analysts believe Faceook’s Modern Messaging System could change the nature of email as we know it. The new Facebook Mail will work like an instant messaging service. Users can obtain and get a @facebook.com email address and you can use the Modern Messaging System, just like you would Gmail, and Yahoo.

“We want people to be able to communicate in whatever way they choose: email, text or Facebook message,” notes Facebook spokeswoman Meredith Chin. “People are given the choice to opt in to having a Facebook email address as a way to have one destination for all of their messages. But, this product is not email. It is modeled much more after Chat.”

Currently Facebook has an email type internal service. However it is only accessible by users of Facebook. With the new system rather than having to go to the inbox, the email will pop up instantly in the chat box.

The user can then reply to the email from the chat box similar to an SMS or instant message in real time.

The message the user replied to will then be sent back to that friend in email form. If you are not at your computer but have Facebook installed on your mobile device, it will send you a push notification about the email that you just received and you can respond in the same way.

Additionally the messages won’t have a traditional subject line or the ability to send a cc (carbon copy) or bcc (blind carbon copy). Users also won’t be able to set an “out of office” message.

However they will be able to exchange picture and video attachments. Also there won’t a set limit on file size constraints, but security measure s will be in place to prevent abuse.
