Geneva, Switzerland (AHN) – Former President George W. Bush cancelled a scheduled appearance at a Jewish group’s charity event in Switzerland later this month because of expected protests to his presence.
Bush was expected to give the keynote speech at the Feb. 12 gala, but leftist groups announced plans to protest the visit, and several human rights groups filed criminal torture and war crimes complaints demanding his arrest should he step foot on Swiss soil, according to several media reports.
The group that invited Bush, the United Israel Appeal, said the decision to cancel his appearance was made to spare Geneva from the protests, not because of the criminal complaints.
Swiss officials said Bush is protected from arrest by diplomatic immunity as a former head of state.
