Athens, GA, United States (AHN) – Georgia lawmakers are considering a new bill that would limit medical privacy. The goal would be to help police find the makers of methamphetamine, and remove children from dangerous situations.
The proposed legislation could give Georgia authorities full access to a list of medication purchased by an individual, including prescribed drugs and over-the-counter drugs.
“We don’t have a searchable database that sheriffs and law enforcement can go in and see who has been buying meth products and who has been buying an excessive amount of pills,” Rep. Tom Weldon, (R-Ringgold) said during a recent meeting with a local chapter of the Chamber of Commerce.
The legislation he is proposing would allow law enforcement access to a patient medical registry without so much as obtaining a warrant.
“We’ve got a problem going up and down I-75, and our kids are being exposed to a lot of pharmaceutical drugs,” Weldon warned. “We need to limit that.”
