New York, NY, United States (AHN) – A day after the United Nations Human Rights Commission declared that the military raid on a Gaza-bound aid flotilla breached international laws, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu described the report as biased and distorted.
Netanyahu said that the entire world saw videos of soldiers coming onto the deck of the Marmara ship into a pre-planned, violent ambush of terror-supporters who tried to kill them with clubs and knives.
Israeli Foreign Ministry also blasted the U.N. report and described it biased, politicized with an extremist approach. In a related development, Turkish President Abdullah Gul in U.N. General Assembly on Thursday said that Ankara was still waiting for an Israeli apology and monetary compensation over flotilla raid, which killed nine of its activists.
“In the light of international law, Turkey’s expectation is a formal apology and compensation for the aggrieved families of the victims and the injured people,” Gul said.
Earlier, Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu had welcomed U.N.’s Gaza flotilla report and described it fair and impartial.
“We expected the council to release a strong report based on strong evidence, and in this sense the report met our expectations,” Davutoglu said and hoped that Israel would learn to use language of international law and act accordingly in future.
Meanwhile, United States President Barack Obama is planning to call the international community to set a one-year deadline to achieve Middle East peace when he will address the U.N. General Assembly later today.
He is also planning to call an agreement, which will lead to a new member of the United Nations – an independent state of Palestine, living in peace with Israel.
Obama on Thursday also made a direct call to Israel on extension of its settlement freeze deadline, which is due to expire on September 26.
