Seniors need to give their Medicare policies a checkup

If you’re a senior or someone who cares about a senior, you may have some homework to do as the holiday season nears. An estimated 2,200 seniors in Douglas County will need to make a decision about their Medicare coverage by Dec. 31. That’s because the Medicare Advantage plans they chose will no longer be offered. Fortunately, there are volunteers available who can help seniors understand what coverage options remain. Sessions begin as soon as Monday and will continue into December. The seniors who are affected, which is about 11 percent of those over the age of 65 in our county, should have been notified by mail. If they weren’t, they need to consider what insurance company has provided their Medicare Advantage program. Those who were covered by Humana, Sterling Life, Pyramid Life and UnitedHealthcare need to do some shopping. The loss of coverage has nothing to do with the health care reform act that President Barack Obama signed into law earlier this year. I Copyright 2010 The News-Review. All rights reserved.
