Mogadishu, Somalia (AHN) – Sheikh Sharif Sheikh Ahmed, the embattled president of the transitional federal government of Somalia on Saturday warned of importing expired food and medicine to war-ravaged Somalia, describing it as dangerous matter facing Somalia’s vulnerable society.
He described it as not following in the principles of Islam and deemed it national treason. Apparently Somali businessmen are importing food and drugs even though they are out of date. He added that they have caught large instances of expired dates being written over.
Separately, Mohamoud Ahmed Nur, Mogadishu mayor today displayed hundreds of bags full of expired food in the Somali capital of Mogadishu, adding that Somali government forces seized it during their search operations.
“These are bags are full of maize, wheat, floor and rice. All have already expired” Nur told reporters in Mogadishu, adding that the sacks will set on fire to avert the spread of disease.
It is the first time Mogadishu’s new administration was forced to seize and destroy expired food.
Somalia has not had a functioning and centralized government able to thoroughly control the country since 1991.
