New York, United States (AHN) – The world’s population will increase to about 9.1 billion in 2050 from the current 6.5 billion and India is predicted to become the most populous nation, according to a report of the United Nations’ Population Division.
The population increase will happen in developing countries with India seen to exceed China’s population by 2030, the report said. Haina Zlotnik, the UN Population Division’s chief, also told a news conference in New York citing that report that Afghanistan, Chad and East Timor will see their population shoot up three times.
Meanwhile, the population in developed countries was predicted to remain static at 1.2 billion, the report added.
The population growth is slower compared to the past 20 to 50 years, according to Thomas Buettner, the report’s author.
